I wonder why people write books? Self-Expression & Therapy, Escapism, Compulsion & Passion

I wonder why people write books? After my failed publishing attempt I gave up on this idea. But became curious why among billions of us, self-publishers only few survive? I think it is the reason people write.

  • Compulsion and Passion: Many authors write because they feel called to do so, describing it as an "angry bee" in their brain or a story demanding to be told.

  • Self-Expression and Therapy: Writing acts as a tool for organizing the chaos of life, processing emotions, relieving stress, or navigating trauma, sometimes called "auto-therapy".

  • Escapism: Creating new worlds allows both the writer and reader to escape everyday reality.

  • Leaving a Legacy: Authors often want to leave a lasting mark on the world, ensuring their stories, memories, or expertise live on for future generations.

I thought, can you image how many people are suffering out there? How many books in every store, how many shows on TV, they all written by traumatized individuals, then we all watch it. Basically, to be honest, we are entertained by other’s madness? It’s crazy, if you think about it. Look at the movie posters and facial expressions on each of them. We are fascinated by violence, aggression and anger & it’s infused on TV 24/7. Then I stumbled upon the book by Lena Dunham … Can I be honest? My first thought after looking at the cover image was “pedophile wrote it”. I did not read the book, mind me, just saw cover design. I had no clue who she was. So I went on Wikipedia and “voilà”: I was basically right. It’s scary. We have absolutely no censorship to what should be published and what should be avoided.

“Other passages in the book recounted incidents like when seven-year-old Dunham touched her one-year-old brother Cyrus’s genitals, masturbated in bed next to him while he was asleep, and coerced him to kiss her with candy. These incidents ranged from Cyrus' infancy until he was 11 years old, while Dunham was between ages of 7 and 17. Dunham's description of these interactions prompted allegations of childhood sexual abuse from right-wing journalists including Ben Shapiro of Truth Revolt and Kevin Williamson of National Review. I have a feeling as if society simply one day decided to … close all psychiatric wards, due to financial reason, and let all crazy people out, then, they invited them all on stage or to the movie sets, as part of the therapy, but, society eventually forgot where they all came from - Psychiatric Ward. Financially, from the Government budget perspective, I suppose it is ok, but they still need a daily treatment. Who is responsible for the influence or results of their madness? Hollywood? Well, it’s burned down already. Now what. Look at the list of Real Estate debts, owed by TV celebrities; look at the list of the car loans, defaulted by the movie & athletic celebrities. Can they handle their own money? No. “Checkmark” - not normal. Ironically absolutely everyone in High School goes through the same “household class”, which actually tells us what to expect in domestic life later, if the parents you had did not teach you. You are expected to cook, clean, take care of hygene, handle basic tasks, and deal with everyday reality in realistic way, by yourself, that included finances. Yet, somehow, “celebrities kind” need: 3 attorney, 5 bookkeepers and still unable to get out of debts … We all know, not all, but very many make way above $400K a year mark. How can you remain broke? Anyway, going through this list of what is “not normal” can end up being endless variation of mental disturbances in their behaviour patterns.

To conclude - most reason for writing are psychological trauma’s related. I am glad I realized it. I was passionate about Feng Shui and Dharma Practice when I wrote it, but once it burned out with realization that no one in this country was even remotely interested in this topic, cooled me down instantly. I have no reason to write, absolutely none. I am very happy about it. My traumas are all fully gone. May be that’s why I failed. Leaving legacy was the last one I ever cared about. I think this is why I am drifting back toward Zen, and Alan Watts, not Tibetan Buddhism anymore.
